Why I Wrote a Theology Handbook for Ordinary Believers

Image
Theology Is Not Just for Scholars I did not grow up wanting to be a theologian. I grew up wanting to know God. That is different. The word "theology" scared me. It sounded like something for men in dusty libraries. Men with spectacles and long words. Men who argued about things that did not matter to the rest of us. But then I started reading the Bible more seriously. And I realized something. Every Christian is a theologian. Every person who thinks about God is doing theology. The question is not whether you do theology. The question is whether you do it well. That is why I wrote this handbook. The Problem with How We Learn Theology Most Christians learn theology by accident. We pick up a verse here. A sermon there. A song lyric that stuck in our heads. A conversation with a friend. We build our understanding of God from scattered pieces. And sometimes those pieces do not fit together. I remember a woman in my church named Mama Bose. She had been a Christian for forty years....

The Man Who Died in My House

Image
A Story of Guilt, Grace, and the Stranger Who Changed Everything Tunde didn't believe in anything. Not God. Not his father's sermons. Not the prayers his mother whispered before she died. Not even the Bible on the shelf, gathering dust like a forgotten promise. He believed in money. In pleasure. In the thrill of the next party, the next girl, the next gamble. His father, Mr. Benson, was a billionaire. A pastor. A man who preached prosperity on Sunday and lived it every other day. Tunde saw the hypocrisy. He saw the fraud. He knew about the company. He knew about the innocent man who went to jail for his father's crime. "Why would I believe in a God who lets that happen?" Tunde would say, laughing with his friends over expensive whiskey. "If He's real, He's either blind or cruel." He had no idea that a stranger was about to answer him. The Knock It was 11:47pm. The kind of hour when the city holds its breath. Tunde was coming home from another ni...

The Quiet Victories Nobody Sees

Image
Why your hidden battles matter more than you think Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:34-37 "But David said to Saul, 'Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.'" The Battle Nobody Saw David was a shepherd. Not a soldier. Not a warrior. Not a giant-slayer. Just a boy with a staff and a sling, watching sheep in the middle of nowhere. While his brothers were on the front lines, David was in the back fields. While others were fighting for glory, David was fighting for sheep. Dirty sheep. Stubbor...

The God Who Restores: The Story of Manasseh and the Mercy That Finds Us Again

Image
The God Who Restores: The Story of Manasseh and the Mercy That Finds Us Again By  Otun Stephen Gbenga  | Philosopher & Theologian There are stories in Scripture that comfort us, and there are stories that confront us. The life of  King Manasseh  does both. It is not just a tale of wickedness and repentance; it is a reminder that  no human being—no matter how ruined by choices—sits outside the reach of God’s mercy. Many people quietly believe that grace is for those who “didn’t mess up too much.” They believe forgiveness is for those who wandered a little, not for those who fell flat. But the story of Manasseh pushes hard against that idea. It is the uncomfortable, almost unbelievable story of a man who did everything wrong… yet still found his way back. A King Who Crossed Every Line Manasseh wasn’t merely “a bad king.” Scripture paints him as one of the darkest rulers in Judah’s history. He: Practiced sorcery and witchcraft Built altars for idol...

When Amen Feels Like Lying

Image
When Amen Feels Like Lying A devotion for the dry places I sat in the pew again. Same row. Same stain on the hymnbook page. Same scratch on the floor where someone's heel dug in. A wedding ring? A nervous foot? Who knows. The worship team sang about a fire. Woman two rows up? Crying. Real tears. The kind that leave salt tracks. Me? Nothing. Not sad. Not angry. Just... nothing. Like a TV channel went off air at 3 AM. Snow. Static. No one home. My fire went out three months ago. Or maybe last year. You know how it is. Days blur when you're just going through the motions of a faith that used to breathe but now just... sits there. On the couch. In its underwear. Eating cold pizza. Sorry. Is that too honest? Too bad. Prayer bounces off the ceiling now. Like a rubber ball thrown at a wall by a bored kid. Thwack. Thud. Thwack. Thud. Scripture reads like a grocery list. Milk. Eggs. Love your neighbor. Bread. Don't commit adultery. Dish soap. Everyone else has tears. Raised hands....

Forgiven, But Not Unscathed

Image
Forgiven, But Not Unscathed Why God’s Mercy Doesn’t Always Erase Sin’s Wounds The Scar That Stays After the Wound Heals “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But...”  2 Samuel 12:13-14 But. That one word splits heaven from earth. David had just heard the sweetest news a guilty man can hear:  Taken away . Pardoned. The prophet Nathan didn’t stutter. God forgave. Yet the next breath carried weight:  But the son born to you will die . Wait. Forgiven, yet a crib turns into a coffin? This is where we squirm. We want forgiveness to be a reset button. Click, and everything goes back to how it was before we touched Bathsheba, before we lied, before we clicked that link. Grace should be bleach. It should lift the stain and the smell. But sometimes God washes the guilt and leaves the scar. David buried a baby. Then watched Amnon rape Tamar. Then watched Absalom kill Amnon. Then watched Absalom’s hair tangle in an oak while Joab’s spear found his heart....
